Guidelines Available for HazMat Training

August 11th, 2009 by Howard Skolnik

For almost 20 years, DOT has been enforcing the Hazardous Material employee training requirement as specified in Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 172.700. While the regulation calls for employee training, it went no further to illustrate an acceptable training format. Only recently, DOT PHMSA published a guide to developing a hazardous materials and security training program. Developed in conjunction with the Dangerous Goods Advisory Council (DGAC), the guide offers explanations for who is required to be trained, what type of training is required for each employee, what types of topics and questions should be included and what recordkeeping and retesting is required. Implementation of these programs is essential in order for anyone dealing with hazardous materials to remain compliant with the Federal regulations. Non-compliance can result in severe fines.
