Raw Material Purchase

Prefabricated steel components are purchased from Skolnik/Chicago and shipped, via sea container, to an assembly location. Components include:

  • Drum Top (For Closed Head Style), or Drum Cover (For Open Head Style)
  • Drum Bottom
  • Drum Body, Welded into a cylinder and nested for maximum shipping efficiency.

The components are shipped as follows:

  • Drum Heads are palletized and plastic wrapped with 500 heads per skid.
  • Drum Bodies are "Nested" (see photographs), palletized and plastic wrapped. Nested units contain five to twelve (5-12) bodies per unit depending on metal gauge.

Assembly

Assembly begins with the separation of the body units. Here the sheets are easily separated using a conventional pliers. The Body is then re-formed using a Rolling Machine, an Expander, or any other type of machine that will ready the body for flanging.

The balance of the assembly operation is reduced to the following:

  1. Flange the Body
  2. Swedge the Body
  3. Seam the Heads
  4. Apply Interior Coating (Optional)
  5. Apply Exterior Coating (Air Dry or Baked)
  6. Testing in Accordance with UN Regulations for Hazardous Material drum only.

Compared to the conventional manufacturing process, Skolnik's PreFab Program offers immediate market expansion for drum reconditioners with little or no set-up expense. Also, as a participant in this program, Skolnik will offer training to your staff to monitor production quality and certify drums in accordance with the United Nations and U.S. Department of Transportation specifications.
