That&lsquo;s because record-keepers don&rsquo;t count the four airliners that crashed Sept. 11th as accidents, but as purposeful crashes by terrorists. Thus, the Aviation Safety Network counted 34 major airplane accidents in 2001, the same as in 1984 and is tied for the fewest since 1945, when the global database began keeping records. Looking at the big picture, 2001 turned out to be the safest year.
