One fun thing: The supply chain problems that impacted production last year have mostly diminished. However, we continue to have issues procuring specific custom paint colors, especially pink, and now we know why; it’s all Barbie’s fault!

During the production of the new Warner Bros. “Barbie” film, an enormous amount of pink paint was used for the sets, so much so that it reportedly depleted the global supply of pink paint from the company Rosco. The film’s production designer, Sarah Greenwood, mentioned in an interview that the world had run out of pink due to the film’s requirements.

However, the situation is more complex, according to Lauren Proud, the vice president of global marketing at Rosco.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic had already caused disruptions in the global supply chain, including the availability of paint.
  • Additionally, Rosco had faced challenges in its paint production due to the impact of a severe freeze in Texas in early 2021.
  • They were already operating with a limited paint supply.

While using a significant amount of pink paint in the “Barbie” film contributed to the strain on the available supply, Proud stated that it wasn’t solely responsible for the shortage. The circumstances surrounding the pandemic and other factors had already created a shortage, and Rosco supplied the film production with all the paint they could provide under those circumstances.
