MDOT to Allow Some Flammable, Corrosive Materials to Cross Ambassador Bridge

In the news: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that starting Oct. 29, 2024 lifted restrictions on transporting flammable liquids and corrosive materials across the Ambassador Bridge. This change follows a request from the Detroit International Bridge Co., the bridge’s owner, in November 2023 to allow the passage of fuels and materials used in battery production.

MDOT conducted a six-month review process, which included public input and a 2021 risk analysis.

  • These hazardous materials are currently routed through the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron and will also be allowed on the future Gordie Howe Bridge.
  • Class 3 flammable liquids, such as fuel and paint, and Class 8 corrosives, including batteries and detergents, are considered dangerous if improperly handled.

To ensure safety, MDOT is implementing several protocols, including banning the transport of these materials during peak hours and requiring vehicle escorts for hazardous shipments.

  • An on-site fire suppression system and spill mitigation measures will also be in place.
  • According to Kenneth Dobson, VP of the Bridge Co., lifting the restrictions will reduce truck travel by 250,000 miles annually, enhancing safety and efficiency.
  • Dobson also reassured that no radioactive materials or hazardous waste would be transported across the bridge.
