At a recent conference of the Hazardous Materials Advisory Council, the Hazardous Materials Systems Manager for UPS, Brad Cook, announced that UPS had begun a system wide assessment of their transport of hazardous materials. In fact, UPS did find that they were transporting improperly prepared packages. In response, UPS has developed a goal of only handling complaint packages in their system claiming they would rather be "safe than sorry." Companies transporting dangerous or regulated goods should be careful to select packaging that will exceed the minimal UN certification requirements, insure safe in-transit movements despite critical transit characteristics, cautiously follow packaging closure instructions and correctly label the package contents.
