Once the year 2000 arrives, companies in the European Community that ship above minimum quantities of dangerous goods will have to appoint a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA). This person will have to be certified and will have the responsibility of monitoring dangerous goods shipments in all respects including classification. Furthermore, the DGSA will have to be trained and experienced in dangerous goods transportation. Being the first continent to mandate a responsibility of this magnitude, it is expected that the concept will be viewed globally as a positive direction towards increasing dangerous goods transport safety.
