More than one-third of the DOT‘s Research and Special Programs Administration enforcement actions pertain to violations of the hazardous materials transportation regulations involving the failure of hazmat employers to provide training or maintain test records and function specific training. Some HazMat employers rely on outside training persons to perform the necessary training functions. In this case, it is incumbent upon the employers to check the qualifications and references of the trainer. It is also necessary to identify if the training is for general awareness or a specific type of function performed within the company. HazMat training should be completed on a regular basis and not after a particular incident. Proper training will help to protect your company from civil proceedings resulting from liability or punitive damages.
