The maximum and minimum civil penalties for a knowing violation of Federal hazardous materials transportation law or a regulation issued under that law are increasing to from a minimum/maximum of $250./$27,500. to $275./$32,500. The Research and Special Projects Administration of DOT has also stated that in proposing or assessing a civil penalty, they will not consider a prior violation in a case that was initiated in a calendar year more than six years prior to the year in which the current proceeding is initiated. Readers of the Skolnik Newsletter know that we encourage haz-mat shippers and packagers to continuously review their training, packaging and shipping procedures for full DOT compliance.
