Though not frequent, criminal prosecutions for HazMat crimes are becoming a real concern for shippers. Recently, the President of a freight consolidating company pleaded guilty to criminal charges for shipping an undeclared pesticide aboard a commercial aircraft. The resulting sentence was eight months in jail followed by eight months of home confinement. As a HazMat shipper, share this information with your management team so that they are aware of the increased risk of shipping improperly packaged or undeclared products. This is not the time to select the least expensive solution as a small, short-term saving could result in a long term risk.
