Properly closing a drum is crucial to the protection of the contents and the safety of the team, environment and vessel during transport or storage. There are numerous configurations of an industrial container and one such configuration option is how the container is closed. For steel drums, you have the option of an open or tight head drum. And within open head drums, there are leverlock and bolt ring closure options. Open head drums are most popular in situations where users need access to their contents, either for frequent addition or extraction, and thus they are regularly opened and closed throughout their use cycle. Closing these drums properly is of the utmost importance.

In fact, when it comes to hazardous materials, proper closure of your drum is the most important part of regulation. The US Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, paragraph 178.2(c), requires that packaging manufacturers give current written instruction to the fillers about the proper closure procedure for their “manufacturer-specific” packaging.

Closure instructions are not generic, they are unique to the configuration and manufacturer of the container.

At Skolnik, we strive to make finding, manufacturing and utilizing the appropriate drum for your needs as easy as possible. And so, in addition to providing written instructions on how to properly fasten the lid of an open head drum, we’ve also made videos.
