The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has issued Addendum I to the 66th Edition of the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), effective immediately as of April 30, 2025. This addendum introduces essential clarifications and regulatory updates that affect the air transport of lithium and sodium batteries, as well as broader amendments to State and Operator variations.
What’s New in Addendum I?
Addendum I includes updates designed to revise, correct, and clarify existing DGR content. Key changes include:
- Clarified instructions and exceptions for shipping lithium and sodium batteries
- Amended State Variations from Canada, Chile, the UK, and others
- New/updated Operator Variations from FedEx, Air Canada, Cargolux, and more
- Revised entries in the Special Provision column for certain batteries, including sodium-ion batteries
- Packing Instruction (PI) updates, particularly those related to battery transport
- Clarifications in Sections 8 and 9 regarding handling requirements for lithium and sodium batteries
2025 DGR Now in Effect
The 66th Edition of the IATA DGR took effect on January 1, 2025, and includes several impactful changes:
- Addition of new items to the List of Dangerous Goods (e.g., sodium-ion batteries)
- Expanded exceptions for vaccines and pharmaceutical products
- Updated Packing Instructions to reflect current battery transport protocols
