At a recent meeting of the Dangerous Goods Packaging Testing Group in Copenhagen, an issue relating to Quality Assurance might effect users of steel drums internationally. A vote was taken in favor of adopting the requirements of ISO 9002 to the production, testing and final inspection of all non-bulk packagings and IBC‘s used for the transportation of dangerous goods. The US voted against the proposal, but it passed and will be balloted as a draft International Standard. If this were to be incorporated into the UN system, the outcome would be that all packaging manufacturers would have to be ISO 9002 certified. While ISO certification and alternative quality assurance options do provide a base knowledge for manufacturers, this certification no more guarantees a good package than the present regulations.
