DOT requires that all hazmat employees performing regulated functions and/or who directly affect hazardous materials transport receive initial and recurrent training. Initial training must be completed before being allowed to work. This followed up with recurrent training at least once every three years to insure retention of skills and knowledge. Training is also needed when there are changes in regulations. Non-compliance with these training regulations can carry fines from the DOT for as much as $27,500. Training programs such as those given by DGAC (www.dgac.org), are available if your company does not have an in-house program.
