Every time we write about hazardous waste handling, we emphasize the importance of compliance. In a recent blog, we discuss resources for staying up-to-date on best practices, procedures, and regulations surrounding hazardous waste, but while it is crucial to keep an eye on emerging and shifting regulations or procedures, first all personnel must obtain proper hazardous waste handling training.
In fact, all employees and personnel of facilities or organizations generating hazardous materials must, by law, be fully trained in the proper handling and storage procedures of that particular material. So, how can one obtain proper training for the handling of hazardous materials?
The governing and regulatory bodies themselves offer courses: OSHA, the EPA, and DOT are excellent resources for the most current policies and regulations, as well as for courses on compliance, safety and more.
They can also point you in the direction of vetted HazMat training partners and programs for further training and education.
In addition to meeting basic training requirements and regulatory compliance, some training may require annual refresher courses.
Proper hazmat training does not end. Annual training, or, effectively, re-training, is mandatory for all employees of businesses generating or handling large quantities of hazardous materials.
