The annual Waste Management (WM) Conference, presented by WM Symposia (WMS), attracts thousands of registrants from around the world and is widely regarded as the premier international conference for the management of radioactive material and related topics. Held this year in Phoeniz, AZ, Skolnik had a significant presence at the event. In addition to a company exhibit, Bill Fitzgerald, Dean Ricker and Howard Skolnik attended the presentation sessions. In addition, Dean and Howard were invited to participate in the speakers panel entitled “Challenges in Manufacturing of Radioactive Material Packages and Containers.” The panel focused on challenges faced by manufacturers in providing high quality radioactive material packagings consistently in a tentative budget environment. Specifically, the panel discussed manufacturing challenges of commonly used packagings used for LLW and radioactive material (such as: IP-1, IP-2 and IP-3, and Type A). Six panelists from the container industry discussed issues they face in several key areas including: 1) maintaining production capability and developing necessary infrastructure in a constantly changing federal budget environment, 2) meeting customer specific requirements beyond the regulatory requirements, and 3) maintaining rigorous quality assurance and quality control capabilities for small production lots. In all, there were approximately 1,500 attendees and the Symposia was informative and productive. To view a photo montage of the event, click here.
