Teaching children about the presence of hazardous materials is our new “grass-roots” approach to educating the public on dangerous goods transport. Combining the brain trust of Skolnik and Labelmaster, we have developed a 33 slide presentation that is geared for both elementary and high school children. Questions such as “What are hazardous materials?” and “Why can these be dangerous?” start the students on a brief understanding of everyday products that can be dangerous and the perils of wrongful shipments. The students are asked to step up and become “HazMat Hero’s” and even consider careers as HazMat Professionals. At a recent presentation to children ranging in ages from 10 to 18, they were surprised to learn that “most of the students in my school carry small amounts of hazardous materials” and “this is a topic that needs to be discussed more often.” The goal of the program is to prevent children, and their parents, from accidentally shipping or carrying on-board aircraft, products that can react badly when in a transport mode. The presentation is in the “beta-testing” mode and can be viewed by going to: www.skolnik.com/hazmatawareness. Since this is not yet a final edition, we would welcome your suggestions for additional points and clarification. Also, if you have familiarity with the HazMat profession, we would like to encourage you to present this program in your local community. Contact me at 773.362.1900 or at howard@skolnik.com to receive a copy of the PowerPoint presentation.
HazMat Industry News

Thank you for the great article promoting the Children’s Hazmat Awareness Program. The article regarding testing was also very relevant and timely.
Thanks

Jeanne – Thank you for the positive comments. It’s come a long way since our first meeting together. Your participation has been invaluable….as always. Howard
Thank heavens for your company, you understand the P.O.P. regulations and actually make open head drums for both solids and liquids. I continually have trouble ordering drums from various places I am “supposed” to be ordering from, they don’t understand the markings, or I receive drums only for liquids. Now I just tell them, “make sure they are from Skolnik!”
Sue – Wow! What a great response! Thank you for reading our Newsletter and yes, we “talk the talk and walk the walk” when it comes to regulatory questions and interpretations. Also, just about all of our products are UN certified, from 3 to 110 US gallon capacities. We welcome your inquiries. Also, our blog has hundreds of stories on many hazmat and regulatory issues. Howard
Love the piece in the newsletter on teaching HazMat Awareness at school.!
Excellent! Sets the tone just right and tweaks interest, it will be interesting to see what kind of feedback you get!
Great to see this program evolving…
Rhonda, Thanks for the positive feedback – could never have happened without your collaboration! Howard
This is a very interesting, innovative idea. Teaching basic in’s and out’s of HazMat (Dangerous Goods in Canada) at an early educational level makes so much sense. I think I’ll add this project to my list and see what is being done here in Canada. Your info-letters are always a great read & I appreciate learning new things about our industry. Thanks for sharing and keep up the wonderful work!
Irene, Thank you for the positive reinforcement on our new program. You are welcome to present the HazMat Awareness program and please send me some feedback. Also, the world of HazMat is strangely intriguing – I do find it endlessly interesting. Howard
Hi Howard… It’s Irene… Unfortunately the plans I had to look into the project back in 2008 never unfolded. There was downsizing at the company where I was employed, and I was let go…however, I am still in the industry and my schedule will allow me to look further into this project. It was brought up in conversation just a few days ago, and the interest still seems to be there…I will definitely keep you in the loop as to what is going on up here in Canada!
Regards,
Irene Morrissette
Hi Irene,
Glad that you were resilient and stayed in the hazmat community. When you are ready to proceed, give me a call or drop me an email.
Best of luck,
Howard
