The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is implementing significant updates to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system, effective July 19, 2025. These changes aim to simplify and modernize the less-than-truckload (LTL) freight classification process, enhancing accuracy and transparency for shippers, carriers, and third-party logistics providers (3PLs).
Key Changes:
- Standardized Density Scale: The NMFC will transition from an 11-class density scale to a 13-class system, introducing Classes 50 and 55. This adjustment provides a more precise classification based on shipment density, especially for commodities without specific handling, stowability, or liability concerns.
- Reclassification of Commodities: Approximately 40% of NMFC items are under review for potential reclassification. Commodities currently assigned a single class or those with modified density breaks, but lacking handling, stowability, or liability issues, will be moved to the new 13-class density scale.
- Enhanced Digital Tools: The existing online tool, ClassIT®, will be replaced by ClassIT+, featuring an improved user interface and a new application programming interface (API). This upgrade aims to streamline the classification process and reduce errors.
