For a Process Management class project, students of the Executive MBA program at the University of Illinois — Urbana Champaign, visited Skolnik to assess the fluidity and productivity of the manufacturing process. Hoping to find that running just 55 gallon drums would fulfill the project requirements, members of the team were surprised to learn the complexity of manufacturing the day-to-day Skolnik mix of products. “How do you organize and schedule so many different products” asked one of team members to which Skolnik VP of Operations, Jesse Sanchez, responded, “it is like conducting an orchestra as every facet of production must be synchronized to perform on time.” Members of the team are hoping to return to Skolnik with suggestions to further improve manufacturing efficiency. After touring, one member scratched his head and stated “it‘s not the run of the mill 55 gallon project that we anticipated. It’s about open and closed heads, 5 gallon to 85 gallon drums and even 110 gallon drums in carbon and stainless steel — it‘s a surprisingly complex process.” We look forward to positive feedback and thank the U of I MBA Team for their interest in our company.
